Get Wisdom and Understanding: The Crucial Step to Life-Changing Action
Have you ever felt stuck despite gaining wisdom? Proverbs 4:7 reveals the key to transforming wisdom into life-changing action. “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” (KJV). This verse challenges us to not only seek wisdom but to apply it through understanding. Let’s explore how this profound truth can reshape your life.
Wisdom teaches us life’s priorities by helping us discern what truly matters each day. It guides how we spend our time, invest in relationships, and pursue goals, ensuring that our daily actions align with eternal significance. As 2 Corinthians 4:18 reminds us, “We do not look at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” Wisdom guides us to live in a way that impacts eternity.
Scripture also emphasizes that we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 20:12). Our works—whether good or bad—matter. James 2 underscores this by stating, “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:17). True wisdom prompts action, proving our faith genuine.
Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines wisdom as “the faculty of discerning or judging what is most just, proper, and useful.” Wisdom is knowing how to use a tool; understanding is knowing when to use it. Wisdom is knowing how to fire a gun; understanding is knowing when to fire it. But how do we obtain wisdom?
Wisdom alone is incomplete. Proverbs 4:7 highlights the need for understanding: “With all thy getting get understanding.” Understanding is wisdom in action—it involves taking the insights gained through wisdom and turning them into deliberate, practical steps in our daily lives. For instance, wisdom might reveal the importance of prioritizing family time, while understanding drives us to schedule intentional moments with loved ones despite our busy routines. It’s not enough to know what to do; we must also do it. James 1:22 warns, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
When we fail to act on the wisdom we’ve received, it hardens our hearts and leaves us stagnant. This is why so many feel spiritually stuck. Obedience—faith in action—is the key to breaking free.
Proverbs describes wisdom as a priceless treasure, stating, “She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her” (Proverbs 3:15). Imagine a person sacrificing all they have to gain something of infinite value—this is the picture of pursuing wisdom. Such a pursuit transforms lives by aligning our priorities with God’s eternal purpose. “She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her” (Proverbs 3:15). Wisdom offers length of days, riches, and honor (Proverbs 3:16; 8:18). Most importantly, wisdom helps us live for another kingdom, empowered by the resurrected Christ.
Gaining wisdom and understanding requires action. Ask God to show you how to apply discernment to your time, finances, relationships, and work. When He reveals what to do, obey promptly. God will not give more light until we act on what He’s already shown us.
Many people struggle spiritually because they neglect to act on God’s guidance. As a result, they remain spiritually immature. Hebrews 5:12 rebukes such stagnation: “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God.” Growth comes through obedience.
The good news is that wisdom is freely available to all who seek it. Proverbs 2:4-5 promises, “If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” No matter your background, God generously offers wisdom to those who ask in faith.
If you feel stuck, ask yourself: Have I acted on the wisdom God has given me? The answer to spiritual stagnation is often simple—obedience. Let your prayer be, “Lord, show me how to apply the wisdom You’ve given me. Help me to walk in obedient faith.”
Remember, wisdom is the principal thing. Get wisdom, and with all your getting, get understanding. When you act on wisdom in the power of Christ, you’ll experience transformation and manifold blessings. As Christ becomes incarnate in you, wisdom will guide every step of your journey.
